Those wishing to attend Wednesday’s Staten Island Metro United Varsity All-Star Baseball Game will truly experience the best of both worlds.
For starters, the game will feature the top 46 Island high school baseball players for the 2022 season as each team will have at least one representative. Second, and most importantly, the TLC Physical Therapy-sponsored game will also serve as a fundraiser for former Curtis HS baseball player and FDNY Lt. Greg “Mickey” Hansen, who was recently diagnosed with ALS.
“This is an opportunity to partner-up with (organizers) Bobby Glennerster, Tommy Laino, Chris Reyes and all the Island high school baseball coaches. TLC is looking forward to getting involved and helping people in our community,’' said TLC Vice President of Marketing Mike Mauro. TLC PT is owned by Jason LaMendola. “We’re thrilled to jump on board and be the lead sponsor.’'

The actual game is scheduled to kickoff at 7:05 p.m. at Mid-Island Babe Ruth League in Travis on Wednesday and in addition to the support of TLC, there’s also plenty of other sponsors that allowed the final official high school game of the 2022 season to happen.
TLC donated the uniforms and hats; Staten Island Baseball Umpire’s Association’s Frank Brocato is sending a four-man crew for the game; Gotham Trinity Productions is live-streaming the contest and Nobody Cares Sports in announcing it.
In addition, Island Entertainment will provide a deejay; the FDNY will send a color guard and ceremonial unit and Notre Dame Academy freshman Leila Rousta will sing the National Anthem.
During the course of the game, the Staten Island Baseball Oldtimers will announce the Island’s top 15 players from the 2022 season and boxing trainer Teddy Atlas of the Dr. Theodore Atlas Foundation will present a $3,000 check for college to a senior All-Star who represents themselves well on the field, in the classroom and community.
But most importantly, the game will support Hansen, who will be in attendance along with his wife America, as well as his children, 10-year-old Gregory-Amaru and 8-year-old Clara. The siblings will throw out the first pitch Wednesday.
“The Watchdogs ALS Foundation was started in support of Mickey, who is a beloved member of the FDNY who would do anything for anybody,’' said Glennerster, the St. Peter’s varsity baseball coach who is a member of the FDNY himself. “Helping him out in his time of need was a no-brainer and, of course, we’re thrilled to have TLC on board, as well as all the sponsors for Wednesday’s game.’'
Glennerster, who credited each of his fellow coaches for their contributions to the All-Star Game, said there’ll be a $5 entry fee. In addition, baskets will be raffled and there’ll be a 50-50 as well. There will also be a Home Run Derby before the game (5 p.m.).
Wednesday’s contest will pit Team White against Team Blue. The rosters were evenly divided and, in many cases, players who were teammates on their high school teams will be playing against each other.
Team Blue’s roster includes: Catchers Anthony Marsillo (Farrell) and Alex Lanza (Sea); third baseman Derek Mendez (Petrides); Shortstops Devin Colon (Moore) and Justin Lopez (Sea); second basemen Julian Velazquez (St. Peter’s) and Nick Paronich (MSIT); first basemen Tim Manuelian (Farrell) and Robert Salafia (Sea); outfielders Chris Polemeni (St. Peter’s), Steve Scarfone (Sea), Joe Scarfone (Petrides), Leo Doyle (Farrell), Troy Batelman (SIA), Ryan Quinn (New Dorp) and Chris Reilly (St. Peter’s) and pitchers Nick DiMartino (Sea), Dennis Aponte (St. Peter’s), Kasey Gilman (Farrell), Michael Terjesen (Curtis), Ryan Fiore (Port Richmond) and Anthony Spungin (Farrell).
