Comics Should Be Cheap (9/7/2022) – Multiversity Comics

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Twig #5 (of 5) ($3.99): I’ve been enamored with this gorgeous dark fantasy story from the beginning, and I’m sad to see it go. It was every bit a spiritual successor to “The Dark Crystal,” and Strahm’s art has never looked more luscious and imaginative. Here’s hoping the team has more in store for Twig and his companion, Splat.

The New Champion of Shazam #2 (of 4)($3.99): Josie Campbell and Doc Shaner knocked the first issue out of the park- a wonderfully brisk re-introduction and status quo shift to a character I had very little previous history with, but nevertheless found myself engaged and intrigued by. Shaner’s art, and particularly his character’s body language and facial expressions, is just top notch.

Total: $7.98 – but if you’re really enjoying the new She Hulk show and want to read some comics with that same energy, Charles Soule and Javier Pulido’s all too brief run with Jen gets an omnibus reprint this week, and tho definitely over the $20 mark, still makes for a great reading investment, if you have the cash to spend!

Always Never ($24.99): Jordi Lafebre’s Franco-Belgian graphic novel (published in Anglais by Dark Horse) tells the story of retiring couple Ana and Zeno’s forty year relationship in reverse chronological order. It sounds (and looks) incredibly delightful and charming, so oui, oui, this is definitely my pick of the week, nothing else sounds anywhere near as adorable as this.

Total: $24.99 — bof, as they say in France.

A Girl And Her Dog ($5.99): Who doesn’t love an animal story that gives you the feels?

Twig #5 ($3.99): I’m with Johnny on this one – – this story reminds me so much of Shrek in its humor and The Dark Crystal in its approach to fantasy. I want to see more of Twig’s world. And would an animated series be too much to ask?

Star Trek #400 ($7.99): While not a regular reader of the “Star Trek” comics, I cannot pass up a good anniversary issue, and one featuring a story from Wil Wheaton to boot.

Shock Shop #1 ($3.99): Anthologies with a hook – – in this case, a haunted comic shop – – interest me as I like to see the creative leaps and bounds the scriptwriters take to tie the disparate stories of the anthology together.

Total: $21.96. Oops. Time to go digging in the cushions of the couch and the car.

Always Never ($24.99) – So I guess I’m just straight up copying Chris here, huh? I’ve been enamoured with this book for quite some time now, thanks to Jordi Lafebre’s Instagram, and on the strength of those little glimpses, I ended up pre-ordering half a year ago. Plus, I love the cover… the umbrellas becoming a heart behind the two leads, and of course, the image is upside down, which serves as a nice visual cue that the story is going to be told in reverse. If the cover has that sort of thoughtful composition, I just know I’m going to adore the comic within.

Total: $24.99. Over budget, but I’m sure Chris will agree, it was absolutely necessary.

We are the Multiversity Staff, and we love you very much.
